The Games of Rome were games with an extreme heat that caused a lot of trouble under the sporters. On the political side South Africa took part for the last time until 1992, Nationalist China was told to compete as Taiwan and a few Caribbean countries took part as the Antilles, much alike Syria and Egypt that took part as the United Arabic Republic. There was one severe problem with the Danish cyclist Knut Jensen who died on the course first due to extreme heat, but later diagnosed as a drug overdose. For the first time in history a world wide TV-coverage was a fact including 18 European countries, the USA, Japan and Canada.
